Of the large volume of kids books published every year, only a small percentage contain LGBT themes, characters or content,  As a result, LGBT books for kids is one of the hardest categories for BookSmiles to fill, representing a critical need.  Scoochie & Skiddles generously donates books to BookSmiles to help address this gap.

Junior League of Rockford is a non-profit organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Our purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

The primary focus of our Literacy Leaders project is a partnership with local pediatric clinics serving under served areas of the Rockford community. Our goal is to place Bookworm vending machines filled with new books of varying skill levels in these select clinics. When a child visits one of these clinics, they will be given a special token to use in the vending machine. The idea of being able to pick a book of their own from the vending machine will make them excited to read it! We are hoping to fill these vending machines with books that represent the demographics of the children that they are serving. We are trying to source a wide variety of diverse books so these children can see themselves in the books they are choosing.
